How to Make Your Own Deodorant (That ACTUALLY Works)

Everyone loves to smell nice, right? That's why giving up my beloved Dove deodorant was a battle. I would try various natural deodorant brands here and there, but nothing compared to the wonder that is Dove. And this is probably TMI, but I was REALLY stinky guys, I needed to re-apply deodorant several times a day and I was constantly worried about smelling.

Until now.

I've found a recipe that I absolutely love, and the best part is that you probably already have most of the ingredients in your kitchen.

If you’ve never used natural deodorant, please refer to my blog post that covers everything you need to know and what to expect when switching to natural deodorant!

  • 1/4 Cup of Baking Soda

  • 1/2 Cup of arrowroot flour

  • 8 Tsp of coconut oil

  • 1 capsule or 1/8th TSP of Activated Charcoal Powder (Order from Amazon HERE) This ingredient is crucial.

  • 10-15 drops of 100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils. (I use Young Living oils! If you’re curious to know more about Young Living, I will happily share more information with 0 pressure to sign up :) Or if you want to buy oils without talking to me, using this link will help me out!)

Tips & Hints:

  • The consistency may vary as coconut oil tends to melt around 74° F . Store your deodorant in a cool, dark place.

  • Scoop about a dime size into your hands, rub together and massage onto your skin. This was weird for me to get used to, but well worth it!

  • If you find your skin feels too dry after using this recipe, try using less baking soda.

  • Consistency should be a smooth paste - feel free to add more or less oil to reach desired consistency

  • Adding too much baking soda may irritate sensitive skin

  • The activated charcoal will make the deodorant appear dark grey - fear not, this color smooths out onto skin (even if you’re pale like me)

My favorite scent right now is lavender (5 drops) + vanilla (7 drops) + Tea Tree (2 drops) + Bergamot (2 drops). One of my favorite things about the natural deodorant as opposed to Dove or other deodorant brands is that overall, my body odor has decreased significantly. And to let you in on a little secret, sometimes I go days without wearing any deodorant and I don’t smell! That is the wonder of allowing your body and skin to detox!

So what are you waiting for? Hop on into your kitchen and stir yourself up some deodorant!
