Toxins: What They Are and Why They're Dangerous

I’ve been pretty into “avoiding toxins” for a while, but more recently I have really started to dive into studying why toxins are bad, what they do to our bodies, and what we can do to avoid them!

Honestly, there is so much to this topic that there’s no way I could know it all, and I’m definitely not a scientist. I am, however, happy to share the little knowledge I have picked up from the interwebs with you!

According to Medical Daily, toxins are any harmful agents found in the environment that can harm your body.

Toxins are impossible to avoid because they’re part of the environment we live in. They become problematic when we start to experience a toxic overload - when our bodies are taking in too many toxins and can’t flush them out via our detox-organs (like you liver, kidneys, and sweat glands).

Practically speaking, a toxic overload is more of a nuisance than anything because we experience unpleasant symptoms which makes day-to-day life a bit more challenging.

Internally, however, a toxic overload can be a much more serious condition. The problem is, we don’t always notice what’s going on “internally” - we just know we feel sluggish or groggy and don’t really think twice about why we feel the way we do. When our bodies can’t flush out toxins and we are in a toxic overload, it puts our bodies into “stress” mode. Essentially, our bodies have to fight fight fight to keep us afloat! When our bodies are in stress mode for an extended period of time, we begin to experience a number of chronic illnesses such as eczema, acne, and even develop auto-immune diseases when left untreated.

These are some general symptoms that might be an indication that you’re experiencing a toxic overload:

  • Body Odor

  • Fatigue

  • Brain Fog / memory loss

  • Headache

  • Insomnia

  • Asthma

  • Arthritis

  • GI Problems (stomach ulcers, constipation, etc)

  • Skin issues such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema

  • Hormone Imbalances

  • Auto-Immune Diseases, and more

If you’re anything like me, you’re looking at those symptoms and thinking “Well I have almost all of those.” That’s why I care so passionately about holistic health - because the majority of my life, I suffered chronically from almost ALL of these symptoms (minus Auto-Immune and Arthritis). The more I learn about detoxing, however, the more ALIVE I am feeling. I’m still on the journey of detoxing my home and environment, but I cannot believe how in-tune with my body I have become in the past 3 years of this journey!

It makes me realize that our bodies are DESIGNED TO FEEL ALIVE. In the past, I was so used to experiencing this symptoms that I thought they were just a part of life, but they’re NOT.

“aggravating symptoms are the language by which our bodies communicate to us"

If you’re experiencing something, it’s an indication that something is off; whether that be a toxic overload, or you ate too much pizza at lunch - our body is ALWAYS telling us something. Start listening :)

I’m actually working on a separate blog post for this, because there’s not just one easy answer. I can however point you in a few directions that have been helpful for me in my detoxing process! Happy detoxing, friend!

  • Eat more plants & drink smoothies

  • Drink more purified & filtered water

  • Avoid using plastics at all costs (this includes food/drinks and toiletries packaged in plastic)

  • Drink organic green tea

  • Limit processed foods, such as sugar, refined flours, certain oils, and so on.

  • Limit fried foods

  • Exercise regularly
